Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Canterbury was 15 to 19 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 65 to 69 year olds, increasing by 121 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of Canterbury in 2021 compared to Glen Iris shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 14.9% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 24.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.9% and 17.2% respectively for Glen Iris.

The major differences between the female age structure of Canterbury and Glen Iris were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 85 and over (5.0% compared to 2.2%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 70 to 74 (5.9% compared to 4.4%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 65 to 69 (6.1% compared to 4.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 0 to 4 (2.8% compared to 4.7%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Canterbury's female population decreased by 175 people (4.2%). This represents an average annual population change of -0.22% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 65 to 69 (+121 females)
  • 60 to 64 (+102 females)
  • 70 to 74 (+99 females)
  • 55 to 59 (+99 females)
