Dominant groups
Analysis of the female five year age groups of Canterbury in 2021 compared to Riversdale Ward shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 14.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 24.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 12.1% and 17.0% respectively for Riversdale Ward.
The major differences between the female age structure of Canterbury and Riversdale Ward were:
- A larger percentage of females aged 15 to 19 (8.2% compared to 4.6%)
- A smaller percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (3.9% compared to 10.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females aged 30 to 34 (3.4% compared to 9.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females aged 35 to 39 (4.7% compared to 7.7%)
Emerging groups
From 2001 to 2021, Canterbury's female population decreased by 221 people (5.2%). This represents an average annual population change of -0.27% per year over the period.
The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 65 to 69 (+107 females)
- 60 to 64 (+103 females)
- 70 to 74 (+97 females)
- 55 to 59 (+96 females)
