Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Hawthorn in 2021 compared to the City of Boroondara shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 12.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 16.0% and 18.3% respectively for the City of Boroondara.

The major differences between the age structure of Hawthorn and the City of Boroondara were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (11.9% compared to 6.6%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (10.4% compared to 5.9%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (9.7% compared to 7.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 10 to 14 (4.7% compared to 6.7%)

From 2011 to 2021, Hawthorn's population increased by 828 people (3.9%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.38% per year over the period.
