Occupation of employment
There were more professionals in Planning area 1 in 2016 than any other occupation.
Planning area 1's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Planning area 1's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Planning area 1 in 2016 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (2,969 people or 17.4%)
- Technicians and Trades Workers (2,899 people or 17.0%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (2,393 people or 14.0%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 8,261 people in total or 48.5% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area employed 19.8% in Professionals; 14.7% in Technicians and Trades Workers; and 12.8% in Community and Personal Service Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Planning area 1 and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (17.0% compared to 14.7%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (14.0% compared to 12.8%)

The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2011 and 2016 in Planning area 1 were for those employed as:
