Location and boundaries

Rural Balance is located in the western part of Shoalhaven City. Rural Balance is bounded by the Wingecarribee Shire and the Municipality of Kiama in the north, the localities of Broughton Vale, Bundewallah, Bellawongarah, Beaumont, Cambewarra, Tapitallee, Longreach, Bamarang, Nowra Hill, Falls Creek, Tomerong, Basin View, Sussex Inlet, Mondayong, Conjola, Yatte Yattah, Milton, Croobyar, Woodstock, Woodburn, Termeil and Cockwhy in the east, Eurobodalla Shire in the south, and the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area and the Goulburn Mulwaree Council area in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1820s, with land used mainly for cattle grazing and timber getting. Many dairy farms were established in the 1840s, with the township of Kangaroo Valley established in the 1850s. Some gold mining took place in Yalwal from the 1860s. Population was minimal until the late 1800s. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years. The population increased during the 1990s, and then was relatively stable from 2001, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Land use

Rural Balance is a predominantly rural area, with a township at Kangaroo Valley. Rural Balance includes many national parks and state forests. Predominate industries include government (NPWS) and agriculture with the majority of the workforce commuting to Nowra/Bomaderry or Milton/Ulladulla. Rural Balance has a median age of 46.

Major features of the area include Bimberamala National Park, Budawang National Park, Budderoo National Park, Bugong National Park, Jerrawangala National Park, Morton National Park, Barrengarry Nature Reserve, Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, Cambewarra Range Nature Reserve, Kangaroo River Nature Reserve, Parma Creek Nature Reserve, Rodway Nature Reserve, Colymea State Conservation Area, Corramy State Conservation Area, Tullarwalla Lagoon, Bendeela Power Station, Kangaroo Valley Power Station, Kangaroo Valley Showground, various state forests and one school.

Rural Balance includes the localities of Barrengarry, Barringella, Bewong, Boolijah, Brooman, Browns Mountain, Buangla, Budgong, Bulee, Burrier, Coolumburra, Endrick, Ettrema, Illaroo, Jerrawangala, Kangaroo Valley, Little Forest, Mogood, Moollattoo, Morton, Mount Kingiman, Parma, Pointer Mountain, Porters Creek, Quiera, Red Rocks, Sassafras, St George, Tallowal, Tianjara, Tolwong, Touga, Tullarwalla, Twelve Mile Peg, Upper Kangaroo River, Wandandian, Wattamolla, Woodhill, Yadboro, Yalwal and Yerriyong, and the Shoalhaven City parts of Barren Grounds, Brogers Creek, Budawang, Budderoo and Currowan. Parts of the localities of Barren Grounds, Brogers Creek and Budderoo are located in the Municipality of Kiama. Part of the locality of Budawang is located in the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council area. Part of the locality of Currowan is located in Eurobodalla Shire.
