More Planning area 1 residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Planning area 1's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Planning area 1 in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (3,439 people or 17.8%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (2,149 people or 11.1%)
  • Retail Trade (2,083 people or 10.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 7,671 people in total or 39.6% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, New South Wales employed 14.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 6.1% in Public Administration and Safety; and 9.0% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Planning area 1 and New South Wales were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (11.1% compared to 6.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (17.8% compared to 14.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.5% compared to 8.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (1.3% compared to 5.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Planning area 1 increased by 4,264 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Planning area 1 were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,522 persons)
  • Construction (+654 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+548 persons)
  • Education and Training (+329 persons)
