The Age Structure of the non-English speaking population in the G21 Region provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care, and language services. Non-English speaking populations may have a quite different age profile to the general population, for instance in a student area, they are likely to be younger, however an area which received a lot of post-war migration may have an older non-English speaking population, and perhaps many second-generation speakers.
Five year age groups present a classic age profile of the population. Each age group covers exactly five years, which enables direct comparison between each group.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the non-English speaking population in the G21 Region in 2021 compared to Regional VIC shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 16.4% of the non-English speaking population was aged between 0 and 14, and 16.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.5% and 14.6% respectively for Regional VIC.
The major differences between the age groups of the non-English speaking population in G21 Region and Regional VIC were:
- A larger percentage of people aged 25 to 29 (10.7% compared to 9.6%)
- A larger percentage of people aged 20 to 24 (6.3% compared to 5.5%)
- A smaller percentage of people aged 40 to 44 (6.9% compared to 7.8%)
- A smaller percentage of people aged 35 to 39 (9.6% compared to 10.2%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, G21 Region's non-English speaking population increased by 7,935 people (28.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 5.18% per year over the period.
The largest changes in the age groups of the non-English speaking population in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 25 to 29 (+1,628 persons)
- 35 to 39 (+1,430 persons)
- 30 to 34 (+1,201 persons)
- 0 to 4 (+702 persons)
