Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of G21 Region in 2021 compared to Regional VIC shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 84.9% of the population used English only, and 9.9% used a non-English language, compared with 86.4% and 7.1% respectively for Regional VIC.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in G21 Region was Mandarin, with 0.7% of the population, or 2,563 people using this language at home.

There were no major differences between G21 Region and Regional VIC in 2021.

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 8,128 or 29.7%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 43,361 or 16.6%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in G21 Region between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Punjabi (+1,379 persons)
  • Mandarin (+631 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+560 persons)
  • Urdu (+424 persons)
