Dominant groups

Analysis of the qualifications of the population in Cairns in 2021 compared to Far North Queensland shows that there was a higher proportion of people holding formal qualifications (Bachelor or higher degree; Advanced Diploma or Diploma; or Vocational qualifications), and a lower proportion of people with no formal qualifications.

Overall, 52.7% of the population aged 15 and over held educational qualifications, and 35.5% had no qualifications, compared with 48.0% and 39.1% respectively for Far North Queensland.

The major differences between qualifications held by the population of Cairns and Far North Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of persons with Bachelor or Higher degrees (19.1% compared to 15.6%)
  • A larger percentage of persons with Advanced Diploma or Diplomas (9.8% compared to 8.6%)
