Location and boundaries

Woree is bounded by Mulgrave Road, the suburb of Earlville and Chinaman Creek in the north, the suburbs of Portsmith and White Rock in the east, Cairns Golf Club, Hepburn Street, the North Coast railway line and the suburb of Mount Sheridan in the south, and the suburb of Bayview Heights, the Sugarcane Tramway and Henley Street in the west.

Name origin

Woree is thought to be named from an Aboriginal word meaning "child" or "shallow water".

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1880s, with gradual growth through to the early 1900s. Significant development did not occur until the 1960s, with rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s. The population fluctuated from the mid 1990s, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Land use

Woree is an established residential, industrial and recreational area, with some commercial land use along Mulgrave Road.

Major features of the area include Cannon Park Racecourse, Cairns Golf Club, Woree Sports and Aquatic Centre, Woree Community Centre, Calanna Park, Hussey Park, Pezzutti Park, Rigg Street Park, Woree Plaza and a number of schools.
