Dominant groups
Analysis of the male five year age groups of Cairns in 2021 compared to Regional QLD shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 19.8% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.5% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.1% and 18.7% respectively for Regional QLD.
The major differences between the male age structure of Cairns and Regional QLD were:
- A larger percentage of males aged 45 to 49 (7.0% compared to 6.4%)
- A smaller percentage of males aged 75 to 79 (2.9% compared to 3.7%)
- A smaller percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (4.6% compared to 5.3%)
- A smaller percentage of males aged 80 to 84 (1.6% compared to 2.3%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, Cairns's male population increased by 4,951 people (6.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.25% per year over the period.
The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 70 to 74 (+1,138 males)
- 75 to 79 (+726 males)
- 10 to 14 (+651 males)
- 0 to 4 (-633 males)
