Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Cairns was 10 to 14 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 2,356 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Cairns in 2021 compared to Mount Sheridan shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.8% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.5% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 23.2% and 12.5% respectively for Mount Sheridan.

The major differences between the male age structure of Cairns and Mount Sheridan were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (4.6% compared to 3.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 0 to 4 (5.6% compared to 7.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 5 to 9 (6.8% compared to 8.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 15 to 19 (6.4% compared to 7.3%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, Cairns's male population increased by 18,685 people (29.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.73% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+2,356 males)
  • 65 to 69 (+2,347 males)
  • 60 to 64 (+2,197 males)
  • 55 to 59 (+1,530 males)
