More Ward 1 residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Ward 1's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Ward 1 in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (6,672 people or 13.8%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (4,896 people or 10.1%)
  • Retail Trade (4,549 people or 9.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 16,117 people in total or 33.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Blacktown City employed 14.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 7.4% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 10.0% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Ward 1 and Blacktown City were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (10.1% compared to 7.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (8.4% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (5.8% compared to 8.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (6.3% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Ward 1 increased by 13,215 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Ward 1 were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+2,472 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+2,159 persons)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+1,571 persons)
  • Education and Training (+1,101 persons)
