More Rural East residents worked in agriculture, forestry and fishing than any other industry in 2021.

Rural East's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Rural East in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (386 people or 33.9%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (108 people or 9.5%)
  • Education and Training (84 people or 7.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 578 people in total or 50.7% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Snowy Monaro Regional Council area employed 8.6% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 8.7% in Public Administration and Safety; and 8.1% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Rural East and Snowy Monaro Regional Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (33.9% compared to 8.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (4.1% compared to 13.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in arts and recreation services (0.7% compared to 5.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (6.3% compared to 9.9%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Rural East increased by 128 between 2016 and 2021.
