Typically, unemployment among youth (under 25) and seniors (over 55) are regarded as important indicators of social cohesion.

Analysis of the employment status of people aged 25 to 34 years (as a percentage of the labour force) in Wollongong City Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a similar proportion in employment, as well as a similar proportion unemployed.
