Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by recent overseas arrivals in Wollongong City in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (867 persons or 28.3%)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (485 persons or 15.8%)
  • Labourers (365 persons or 11.9%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 1,717 people in total or 56.0% of the employed recent overseas arrivals.

In comparison, Regional NSW employed 21.5% in Professionals; 15.9% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 24.4% in Labourers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the recent overseas arriving population of Wollongong City and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of people employed as Professionals (28.3% compared to 21.5%)
  • A larger percentage of people employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (10.4% compared to 5.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Labourers (11.9% compared to 24.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (8.3% compared to 12.7%)
