Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Wollongong City in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (16,950 people or 17.3%)
  • Education and Training (10,985 people or 11.2%)
  • Construction (9,045 people or 9.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 36,980 people in total or 37.7% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional NSW employed 16.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.2% in Education and Training; and 9.4% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Wollongong City and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (11.2% compared to 9.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (6.7% compared to 4.9%)
