Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Westmead in 2021 compared to the City of Parramatta shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 20.5% of the population used English only, and 70.9% used a non-English language, compared with 38.2% and 56.4% respectively for the City of Parramatta.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Westmead was Hindi, with 10.8% of the population, or 895 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Westmead and the City of Parramatta in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Hindi at home (10.8% compared to 3.7%)
  • A larger percentage using Gujarati at home (7.6% compared to 1.7%)
  • A larger percentage using Telugu at home (6.0% compared to 1.4%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (3.1% compared to 12.4%)

Between 2001 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 3,309 or 129.9%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 533 or 23.9%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Westmead between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Gujarati (+570 persons)
  • Nepali (+470 persons)
  • Telugu (+459 persons)
