Rosehill Ward

About the profile areas

The 2015 Estimated Resident Population for Rosehill Ward is 56,407, with a population density of 22.16 persons per hectare.

Location and boundaries

Rosehill Ward is bounded by the railway line, Hassall Street, Harris Street, Macarthur Street and Victoria Road in the north, Wharf Road, the Parramatta River, Homebush Bay, Powells Creek and Homebush Bay Drive in the east, the Western Motorway (M4) in the south, and Burnett Street, the Great Western Highway, Good Street, Amos Street and the western edge of the former Parramatta Golf Club in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1788, with land used mainly for farming and nurseries. Population was minimal until the 1860s. Residential and industrial growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, spurred by the opening of railway lines and the establishment of the State Brickworks and the State Abattoirs (in what is now Sydney Olympic Park). The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly from the 1950s, including public housing construction. The first stage of the Silverwater Correctional Centre was opened in 1970. The population of the area increased substantially from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly high and medium density housing. Extensive redevelopment occurred in the suburbs of Newington and Sydney Olympic Park from the late 1990s into the early 2000s, when much of the area was developed into sporting, recreation and entertainment facilities and the Athletes Village for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Population growth is expected to continue, particularly in the suburbs of Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Wentworth Point.

Land use

Rosehill Ward is a residential, industrial, maritime, recreational, entertainment, commercial and institutional area. Recent residential growth (largely from redevelopment) has taken place in the south-eastern areas.
