Settlement of the area dates from 1794 when the first land grant was made, with land used mainly for farming and orcharding. Population was minimal until the 1850s, aided by the creation of Lake Parramatta. Growth took place from the 1880s into the early 1900s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006 as few new dwellings were added to the area and the average number of persons living in each dwelling declined. The population then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011, largely due to an increase in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
