Settlement of the area dates from the 1790s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1850s. Rapid growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line. Significant development occurred from the 1950s into the 1970s, including public housing construction. The population increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium density housing.
Dundas Ward is an established residential area, with an industrial area in the south, a small military area in the east, and several small commercial areas.
