Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by people aged 65 to 79 years in the City of Parramatta in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 48.3% of people aged 65 to 79 years spoke English only, and 47.8% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 61.4% and 33.9% respectively for Greater Sydney.

Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by people aged 65 to 79 years in the City of Parramatta was Mandarin, with 11.0% of the population, or 2,633 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for people aged 65 to 79 years of the City of Parramatta and Greater Sydney in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage speaking Mandarin at home (11.0% compared to 4.0%)
