A high level of unemployment or low participation rate (the percentage of the population in the labour force) can indicate a community of recent migrants with difficulties adjusting to economic life in Australia, and perhaps with a reliance on government benefits.
Differences in employment status for the local non-English speaking population may be related to the age and length of time that population has been in Australia, proportion of second-generation migrants, as well as qualification levels.

Dominant groups
The size of the Inner West Council's non-English speaking labour force in 2021 was 24,852 persons, of which 7,129 were employed part-time and 13,592 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) of non-English speakers in the Inner West Council in 2021 compared to the total population in the Inner West Council shows that there was a lower proportion in employment, and a higher proportion unemployed. Overall, 93.7% of the non-English speaking labour force was employed, and 3.7% unemployed, compared with 95.7% and 2.5% respectively for the total population in the Inner West Council.
Analysis of the non-English speaking labour force participation rate of the population in the Inner West Council in 2021 shows that there was a lower proportion in the labour force (59.0%) compared with the total population in the Inner West Council (68.4%).
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of non-English speaking population employed in the Inner West Council showed a decrease of 2,793 people and the number unemployed showed a decrease of 107 people.
