Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in Division 01 in 2021 compared to Division 08 shows that there was a smaller proportion of people born overseas.

Overall, 25.5% of the population was born overseas, compared with 31.3% for Division 08.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in Division 01 was India, where 1.9% of the population, or 1,041 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in Division 01 and Division 08 were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in New Zealand (9.5% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China (0.5% compared to 2.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in United Kingdom (4.7% compared to 5.8%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people born overseas increased by 5977 or 77.0%.

The largest changes in birthplace countries of the population in this area between 2016 and 2021 were for those born in:

  • New Zealand (+1,822 persons)
  • India (+927 persons)
  • United Kingdom (+723 persons)
  • South Africa (+362 persons)
