Location and boundaries

Coombabah is bounded by Turana Street in the north, Oxley Drive and Pine Ridge Road in the east, the Gold Coast Highway in the south, and Coombabah Creek in the west.

Name origin

Coombabah is named from an Aboriginal word meaning either "place of the cobra worms" or "place of the turtles".

Settlement history

Development of the area dates primarily from the post-war years. Substantial growth took place from the 1970s. The population doubled during the 1990s, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area. Growth slowed between 2001 and 2011 as fewer new dwellings were added.

Coombabah is a residential and parkland area.

Major features of the area include Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area, Ivan Gibbs Wetland Reserve, Coombabah Lake, Paradise Lake, Runaway Lagoons, Lakeside Country Club, Coombabah Plaza, Mason Field (Southport Airport), Chiba Reserve, Grassy Park, Nolan Park, Possum Park, Royal Park, Wallaby Park and two schools.
