The three largest ancestries in Fairfield East in 2016 were Vietnamese, Chinese and Australian.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in Fairfield East regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Fairfield East in 2016 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • Vietnamese (1,294 people or 24.4%)
  • Chinese (671 people or 12.7%)
  • Australian (485 people or 9.2%)
  • Lebanese (474 people or 9.0%)
  • English (408 people or 7.7%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 3,332 responses in total, or 62.96% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in Fairfield East and Fairfield City were:

  • A larger percentage of people with Lebanese ancestry (9.0% compared to 3.1%)
  • A larger percentage of people with Vietnamese ancestry (24.4% compared to 19.9%)
