Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Rural South in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (422 people or 26.5%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (192 people or 12.0%)
- Manufacturing (143 people or 9.0%)
In combination, these three industries employed 757 people in total or 47.5% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Colac - East employed 5.8% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 12.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 24.8% in Manufacturing.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Rural South and Colac - East were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (26.5% compared to 5.8%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (9.0% compared to 24.8%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (4.7% compared to 8.3%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (6.9% compared to 9.1%)

The largest change in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Rural South was for those employed in:
