Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in West Wollongong in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (423 people or 17.2%)
  • Education and Training (344 people or 14.0%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (219 people or 8.9%)

In combination, these three industries employed 986 people in total or 40.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Wollongong City employed 17.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 11.2% in Education and Training; and 7.0% in Accommodation and Food Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of West Wollongong and Wollongong City were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (14.0% compared to 11.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (8.9% compared to 7.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (2.2% compared to 3.5%)

The number of employed people in West Wollongong increased by 207 between 2016 and 2021.
