The number of bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with household size information, can be an indication of whether there is overcrowding in dwellings, and perhaps housing affordability and availability issues in the First Nations community in the area.
Households are counted as a First Nations household if they contain one or more Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander usual residents on Census night. This dataset presents number of bedrooms in dwellings containing at least one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander usual resident. It is entirely possible and even probable in many cases that some bedrooms are occupied by non-indigenous household members or visitors.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the number of bedrooms in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dwellings in Sunshine Coast Council in 2021 compared to the number of bedrooms in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dwellings in Regional QLD shows that there was a lower proportion of dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and a higher proportion of dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 17.2% of households were in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and 42.5% of 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 21.3% and 36.3% for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in Regional QLD respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Sunshine Coast and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in Regional QLD were:
- A larger percentage of 4 bedrooms (32.7% compared to 28.6%)
- A larger percentage of 5 bedrooms or more (9.8% compared to 7.7%)
- A smaller percentage of 2 bedrooms (14.0% compared to 16.4%)
- A smaller percentage of 0 or 1 bedrooms (3.2% compared to 4.8%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in the number of bedrooms per dwelling for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Sunshine Coast between 2016 and 2021 were:
- 3 bedrooms (+516 dwellings)
- 4 bedrooms (+491 dwellings)
- 5 bedrooms or more (+159 dwellings)
- 2 bedrooms (+149 dwellings)
