This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in SSROC region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (110,790 people or 12.9%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (106,462 people or 12.4%)
  • Education and Training (74,744 people or 8.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 291,996 people in total or 34.0% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Greater Sydney employed 10.9% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 13.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 8.5% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of SSROC region and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (12.9% compared to 10.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (4.0% compared to 5.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in SSROC region increased by 31,832 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in SSROC region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+16,781 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+16,140 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (-13,045 persons)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+9,291 persons)
