First Nations households may be more or less likely to have access to vehicles in some areas based on socio-economic status and the availability of public transport in the area. The number of vehicles can also be related to the number of adults and older children in the household.
Number of motor vehicles data should also be viewed in conjunction with Number of Bedrooms and Household Size to further build the story of the First Nations population in the City of Newcastle.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the car ownership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to [POPBMHH] shows that 88.2% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned at least one car and 9.9% did not, compared with 89.1% and 8.3% respectively for [POPBMHH] .
Of those that owned at least one vehicle, there was a larger proportion who owned just one car, a similar proportion who owned two cars, and a smaller proportion who owned three cars or more.
Overall, 32.5% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned one car, 34.9% owned two cars, and 20.8% owned three cars or more, compared with 30.8%, 35.1% and 23.2% respectively for [POPBMHH].
The major differences between car ownership for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in City of Newcastle and [POPBMHH] were:
- A larger percentage of 1 motor vehicle (32.5% compared to 30.8%)
- A larger percentage of No motor vehicles (9.9% compared to 8.3%)
- A smaller percentage of 3 or more motor vehicles (20.8% compared to 23.2%)
