More Northern Rural male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Northern Rural's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Northern Rural in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (221 males or 17.3%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (215 males or 16.9%)
  • Manufacturing (100 males or 7.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 536 males in total or 42.0% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Wingham and surrounds employed 16.5% in Construction; 10.5% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; and 13.0% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Northern Rural and Wingham and surrounds were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (16.9% compared to 10.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in manufacturing (7.8% compared to 13.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in retail trade (6.2% compared to 8.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in health care and social assistance (5.8% compared to 7.8%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Northern Rural increased by 166 between 2016 and 2021.
