Dominant groups
Analysis of the share of the non-English speaking population attending educational institutions in the City of Melbourne in 2021 compared to the total population in the City of Melbourne shows that there was a similar proportion attending primary school, a similar proportion attending secondary school, and a higher proportion engaged in tertiary level education.
Overall, 2.3% of the non-English speaking population were attending primary school, 1.8% of the population were attending secondary institutions, and 23.4% were learning at a tertiary level, compared with 2.4%, 2.0% and 18.3% respectively for the total population in the City of Melbourne.
The major differences between the share of the non-English speaking population attending learning institutions in the City of Melbourne and the total population in the City of Melbourne were:
- A larger percentage of people attending University (23.4% compared to 18.3%)
- A larger percentage of people attending TAFE/Vocational (7.8% compared to 4.9%)
- A larger percentage of people attending other (4.4% compared to 2.5%)
- A smaller percentage of people not attending (58.8% compared to 61.6%)
