Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in East Gippsland Shire in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (3,130 people or 16.3%)
- Construction (1,918 people or 10.0%)
- Retail Trade (1,868 people or 9.7%)
In combination, these three industries employed 6,916 people in total or 36.0% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Regional VIC employed 16.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.0% in Construction; and 9.5% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of East Gippsland Shire and Regional VIC were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (8.0% compared to 6.6%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (8.4% compared to 7.2%)

The number of employed people in East Gippsland Shire increased by 2,192 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in East Gippsland Shire were for those employed in:
