This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Yarra Valley in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (2,186 people or 17.9%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,524 people or 12.5%)
  • Retail Trade (1,066 people or 8.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 4,776 people in total or 39.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Yarra Ranges Council employed 14.9% in Construction; 13.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 9.0% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Yarra Valley and Yarra Ranges Council were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in construction (17.9% compared to 14.9%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (4.9% compared to 2.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.6% compared to 6.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (7.9% compared to 9.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Yarra Valley increased by 950 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Yarra Valley were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+479 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+238 persons)
  • Education and Training (+147 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+61 persons)
