The Age Structure of the non-English speaking population in the MidCoast Council provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care, and language services. Non-English speaking populations may have a quite different age profile to the general population, for instance in a student area, they are likely to be younger, however an area which received a lot of post-war migration may have an older non-English speaking population, and perhaps many second-generation speakers.
Five year age groups present a classic age profile of the population. Each age group covers exactly five years, which enables direct comparison between each group.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the non-English speaking population in the MidCoast Council in 2021 compared to the total population in the MidCoast Council shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 16.4% of the non-English speaking population was aged between 0 and 14, and 20.5% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 14.6% and 33.2% respectively for the total population in the MidCoast Council.
The major differences between the age groups of the non-English speaking population in MidCoast Council area and the total population in the MidCoast Council were:
- A larger percentage of people aged 35 to 39 (10.1% compared to 4.2%)
- A larger percentage of people aged 30 to 34 (9.1% compared to 4.1%)
- A larger percentage of people aged 40 to 44 (7.7% compared to 4.4%)
- A smaller percentage of people aged 70 to 74 (5.4% compared to 9.2%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, MidCoast Council area's non-English speaking population increased by 696 people (29.2%). This represents an average annual population change of 5.26% per year over the period.
The largest changes in the age groups of the non-English speaking population in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 30 to 34 (+123 persons)
- 35 to 39 (+119 persons)
- 25 to 29 (+114 persons)
- 5 to 9 (+73 persons)
