More MidCoast Council area residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in MidCoast Council area in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (6,600 people or 19.4%)
  • Retail Trade (3,783 people or 11.1%)
  • Construction (3,477 people or 10.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 13,860 people in total or 40.7% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional NSW employed 16.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.4% in Retail Trade; and 9.4% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of MidCoast Council area and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (19.4% compared to 16.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (11.1% compared to 9.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (4.6% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in mining (1.1% compared to 2.4%)

The number of employed people in MidCoast Council area increased by 3,989 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in MidCoast Council area were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,409 persons)
  • Construction (+631 persons)
  • Education and Training (+421 persons)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+291 persons)
