This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Waterways in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Construction (81 males or 11.4%)
- Manufacturing (75 males or 10.5%)
- Retail Trade (75 males or 10.5%)
In combination, these three industries employed 231 males in total or 32.4% of the total employed male resident population.
In comparison, Patterson Lakes employed 20.9% in Construction; 12.5% in Manufacturing; and 9.7% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Waterways and Patterson Lakes were:
- A larger percentage of males employed in health care and social assistance (7.4% compared to 3.9%)
- A larger percentage of males employed in accommodation and food services (6.7% compared to 4.6%)
- A larger percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (5.8% compared to 3.7%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in construction (11.4% compared to 20.9%)

The number of employed males in Waterways increased by 47 between 2016 and 2021.
There were no major differences in Waterways between 2016 and 2021.
