Dominant groups
Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Darebin in 2021 compared to Northern Region shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 63.3% of the population used English only, and 32.3% used a non-English language, compared with 59.8% and 35.5% respectively for Northern Region.
The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Darebin was Greek, with 5.7% of the population, or 8,510 people using this language at home.
The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Darebin and Northern Region in 2021 were:
- A larger percentage using Greek at home (5.7% compared to 2.8%)
- A larger percentage using Italian at home (5.3% compared to 3.4%)
- A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (2.4% compared to 4.5%)

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home decreased by 6,170 or 11.4%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 11,499 or 13.9%.
The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the City of Darebin between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

- Arabic (-816 persons)
- Greek (-791 persons)
- Mandarin (-742 persons)
