Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the Western Sydney (LGA) in 2021 compared to Ku-ring-gai Council area shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 48.3% of the population used English only, and 45.7 used a non-English language, compared with 64.0% and 33.4% respectively for Ku-ring-gai Council area.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the Western Sydney (LGA) was Arabic, with 7.1% of the population, or 185,377 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the Western Sydney (LGA) and Ku-ring-gai Council area in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Arabic at home (7.1% compared to 0.3%)
  • A larger percentage using Vietnamese at home (3.7% compared to 0.3%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (3.9% compared to 13.1%)
  • A smaller percentage using Cantonese at home (2.4% compared to 5.5%)

Emerging groups

Between 2011 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 350,663 or 41.7%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 121,987 or 10.7%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the Western Sydney (LGA) between 2011 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Mandarin (+51,564 persons)
  • Arabic (+39,357 persons)
  • Nepali (+27,291 persons)
  • Urdu (+24,248 persons)
