In 2021, there were more females working as professionals in the City of Townsville than any other occupation.

The City of Townsville’s occupation statistics quantify the broad occupation group in which people work. The occupation classification is generally arranged in descending order by the level of qualification required to perform that occupation, starting with Managers and Professionals and finishing with Labourers.

Differences between females and males are quite apparent in occupation categories nationwide. Males are more likely to perform jobs involving physical labour such as Technicians and Trades Workers, and Machinery Operators and Drivers, as well as Managerial roles. Females are more often found in Community and Personal Service and Clerical roles. The extent to which the local area differs from this pattern can provide important insights into the changing employment landscape for the sexes.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in City of Townsville in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (11,862 people or 25.2%)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (9,578 people or 20.4%)
  • Clerical and Administrative Workers (9,369 people or 19.9%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 30,809 people in total or 65.6% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, City of Townsville - Total population employed 19.7% in Professionals; 16.1% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 12.3% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.

The major differences between the jobs held by females in the City of Townsville and City of Townsville - Total population were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (19.9% compared to 12.3%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (25.2% compared to 19.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (4.4% compared to 14.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (1.7% compared to 7.5%)

The number of employed females in City of Townsville increased by 4,908 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of females in the City of Townsville between 2016 and 2021 in the City of Townsville were for those employed as:

  • Professionals (+1,645 females)
  • Managers (+721 females)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+213 females)
