Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Southern Tasmania in 2021 compared to Tasmania shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 25.3% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.3% were one-parent families, compared with 24.0% and 11.1% respectively for Tasmania.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 26.5% compared to 27.6% in Tasmania while the proportion of couples without children was 27.7% compared to 28.3% in Tasmania.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Southern Tasmania increased by 10,637 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Southern Tasmania between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (+4,355 households)
  • Couples with children (+2,856 households)
  • Lone person (+1,864 households)
