Educational Qualifications relate to education outside of primary and secondary school and are one of the most important indicators of socio-economic status. For the overseas-born they are likely to be related to the age and year of migration (younger age groups are more likely to have qualifications generally), and also to the level of skilled migration in the area. The recognition of overseas qualifications in Australia and the Census may also be a factor influencing the qualification levels of migrant communities. Overseas-born populations may have higher or lower qualification levels than the total population, and this may be tied to Employment and Household Income.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the qualifications of the population born in East Asia in the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a higher proportion of people holding formal qualifications (Bachelor or higher degree; Advanced Diploma or Diploma; or Vocational qualifications), and a lower proportion of people with no formal qualifications.
Overall, 72.2% of the population born in East Asia aged 15 and over held educational qualifications, and 23.7% had no qualifications, compared with 62.6% and 33.5% respectively for Greater Sydney.
The major differences between qualifications held by the population born in East Asia in the City of Sydney and Greater Sydney were:
- A larger percentage of people with Bachelor or Higher degrees (54.5% compared to 44.7%)
- A larger percentage of people with Advanced Diploma or Diplomas (13.0% compared to 10.3%)
- A smaller percentage of people with No qualifications (23.7% compared to 33.5%)
- A smaller percentage of people with Vocational qualifications (4.7% compared to 7.6%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in the qualifications of the population born in East Asia in the City of Sydney between 2016 and 2021 were in those with:
- No qualifications (-7,048 persons)
- Bachelor or Higher degrees (+2,017 persons)
- Advanced Diploma or Diplomas (+1,103 persons)
- Vocational qualifications (+181 persons)
