This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Paddington's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Paddington in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (418 females or 49.1%)
- Managers (181 females or 21.3%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (107 females or 12.6%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 706 females in total or 83.0% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, Kings Cross employed 38.3% in Professionals; 20.4% in Managers; and 16.0% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Paddington and Kings Cross were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (49.1% compared to 38.3%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (12.6% compared to 16.0%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Labourers (0.7% compared to 3.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (5.9% compared to 8.8%)
