More City of Sydney female residents worked in professional, scientific and technical services than any other industry in 2021.

The City of Sydney's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in City of Sydney in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (10,633 females or 18.2%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (7,635 females or 13.0%)
  • Education and Training (5,460 females or 9.3%)

In combination, these three industries employed 23,728 females in total or 40.5% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, New South Wales employed 8.4% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 22.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 13.1% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of the City of Sydney and New South Wales were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (18.2% compared to 8.4%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in financial and insurance services (9.1% compared to 5.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (13.0% compared to 22.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in education and training (9.3% compared to 13.1%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in City of Sydney increased by 4,440 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in the City of Sydney were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+2,141 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (-1,609 females)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,254 females)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+1,096 females)
