In 2021, the largest age group in the City of Sydney was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 1991 was 30 to 34 year olds, increasing by 22,980 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Chinatown and CBD South Village Area shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 7.6% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 9.6% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 5.3% and 4.5% respectively for Chinatown and CBD South Village Area.

The major differences between the age structure of the City of Sydney and Chinatown and CBD South Village Area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 50 to 54 (5.2% compared to 3.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (16.2% compared to 21.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (15.9% compared to 19.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (10.2% compared to 13.4%)

Emerging groups

From 1991 to 2021, City of Sydney's population increased by 111,245 people (106.8%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.45% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 30 to 34 (+22,980 persons)
  • 25 to 29 (+21,377 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (+15,258 persons)
  • 20 to 24 (+9,261 persons)
