In 2021, the largest age group in the City of Sydney was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 30 to 34 year olds, increasing by 11,709 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Surry Hills shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 7.6% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 9.6% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 5.6% and 10.4% respectively for Surry Hills.

The major differences between the age structure of the City of Sydney and Surry Hills were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (10.2% compared to 8.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (2.5% compared to 1.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 0 to 4 (3.5% compared to 2.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 50 to 54 (5.1% compared to 6.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, City of Sydney's population increased by 55,068 people (35.2%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.03% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 30 to 34 (+11,709 persons)
  • 25 to 29 (+8,426 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (+8,401 persons)
  • 40 to 44 (+4,424 persons)
