In 2021, the largest age group in the City of Sydney was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 30 to 34 year olds, increasing by 8,551 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Sydney shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 7.8% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 10.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 5.6% and 6.8% respectively for Sydney.

The major differences between the female age structure of the City of Sydney and Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 60 to 64 (3.9% compared to 2.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (17.1% compared to 20.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 30 to 34 (15.8% compared to 18.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 35 to 39 (10.7% compared to 12.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, City of Sydney's female population increased by 37,688 people (59.2%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.35% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 30 to 34 (+8,551 females)
  • 25 to 29 (+7,846 females)
  • 35 to 39 (+5,676 females)
  • 20 to 24 (+2,889 females)
