The ability of the population to access services and employment is strongly influenced by access to transport. The number of motor vehicles owned or used by First Nations households can be used as an indicator of access to transport and ability to participate in society.
First Nations households may be more or less likely to have access to vehicles in some areas based on socio-economic status and the availability of public transport in the area. The number of vehicles can also be related to the number of adults and older children in the household.
Number of motor vehicles data should also be viewed in conjunction with Number of Bedrooms and Household Size to further build the story of the First Nations population in Northern Councils Alliance.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the car ownership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in Northern Councils Alliance in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne households shows that 87.3% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned at least one car and 10.7% did not, compared with 87.6% and 10.3% respectively for Greater Melbourne households .
Of those that owned at least one vehicle, there was a larger proportion who owned just one car, a similar proportion who owned two cars, and a smaller proportion who owned three cars or more.
Overall, 33.0% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households owned one car, 34.6% owned two cars, and 19.7% owned three cars or more, compared with 31.9%, 34.3% and 21.4% respectively for Greater Melbourne households.
The major differences between car ownership for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in Northern Melbourne Region and Greater Melbourne households were:
- A larger percentage of 1 motor vehicle (33.0% compared to 31.9%)
- A smaller percentage of 3 or more motor vehicles (19.7% compared to 21.4%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in car ownership per household for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Northern Melbourne Region between 2016 and 2021 were:
- 2 motor vehicles (+540 households)
- 1 motor vehicle (+467 households)
- 3 or more motor vehicles (+358 households)
- No motor vehicles (+119 households)
