Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in City of Newcastle in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (13,075 females or 30.3%)
  • Education and Training (6,056 females or 14.0%)
  • Retail Trade (4,069 females or 9.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 23,200 females in total or 53.8% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Waratah West employed 33.6% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 14.9% in Education and Training; and 10.5% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of the City of Newcastle and Waratah West were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (6.8% compared to 3.8%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (5.8% compared to 4.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (30.3% compared to 33.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in retail trade (9.4% compared to 10.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in City of Newcastle increased by 13,519 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2006 and 2021 in the City of Newcastle were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+5,989 females)
  • Education and Training (+2,262 females)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+1,125 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+989 females)
